A hiker was pronounced dead after he was found unresponsive Saturday on a Hawaiian Electric Co. service road on the Maalaea side of the Lahaina Pali Trail, officials said.

He was identified as Loch Eggers, 55, of Paia.

Officials were called at 10:46 a.m. after other hikers found the man about 1 mile above Honoapiilani Highway, according to the Maui Fire Department. Bystanders began cardiopulmonary resuscitation before a fire rescue crew arrived aboard the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter. The man was flown to a landing zone, where he was pronounced dead by medics, the Fire Department reported.

An autopsy has been scheduled, police said.
